Chondropetalum tectorum - Cape Rush
Chondropetalum tectorum - Cape Rush
Chondropetalum tectorum also known as cape rush or small cape rush is a grass like plant from the southern cape of the Southern African range, that forms dense tufted clumps with 2-3 foot tall dark green unbranched stems. It's the smaller cousin of chondropetalum elephantinum which grows to double the size.
Chondropetalum comes from the Greek words chondros, which means big grain of wheat, and petalum, meaning a flower petal. The name was given to small cape rush considering the dark brown stems arch gracefully from the weight of the flowers which have a brown flower color, at the tips. The small brown flowers contrast perfectly against the rich green stems and dark brown sheaths. It is also used as roof coverings within its native South Africa.
While Chondropetalum looks like an ornamental grass, it doesn’t go dormant and turn brown at season’s end and offers a unique evergreen structure to any garden setting, providing soft movement and structure at the same time. The versatility to survive in a water garden or regular soil garden is also very unique.
Use In Many Garden Settings
Cape rush is also adaptable to many garden styles from water gardens to seaside gardens, mediterranean gardens, dry landscapes, near rock waterfalls, and within drought tolerant landscapes. Being adaptable to seaside gardens is particularly important given most plants can't handle the additional salt. Chondropetalum tectorum also works well in modern or Asian inspired gardens, whether planted alone or mixed with other shrubs, grasses and bold cacti like Agave Americana and Agave Blue Wave.
How To Maintain
Best planted in full to part sun, chondropetalum tectorum requires low water but appreciates supplemental water in the early spring. Summer water may be necessary to keep the plant from drying out too much. It is hardy to about 20-25 degrees F and also tolerates a wide soil pH range in many soil types. Trim back old foliage to the base that grow into pathways or arch into other plants in the garden and to keep it contained before new leaves form.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY PLANT IS DEAD?
Leaf drop or discoloration is not a sign of a dead or dying plant, and it is not uncommon for plants to lose leaves or change colors during periods of transition, whether that's transitioning to a new home or from season to season. To determine if a plant is still alive, scratch a trunk or stem at the base of the plant with something sharp like a coin or your fingernail. If the tissue below is green-tinged and damp, your plant is alive and will continue to sprout new fronds. If it is difficult to scratch, and only shows signs of dried black or brown tissue below, the plant is dead.
"Trees are beautiful and delivery guy was early. Thanks for your help. Will def buy more trees from you guys."

Simply put, our products and services are meant to make your life easier and healthier, no matter your level of expertise.
How long does it take for plants to reach my house?
We ship locally within California within 5-7 days of your order being placed. We ship nationally using carrier partners, based on order size.
Text or call 323-576-4159 for specific shipping details for your location.
Can I come and pick out my plants?
We believe that you should see your plants growing and see what your tree or plant will look like when it arrives. That's why we have photos direct from the growing grounds and we display pricing right in our store. Unfortunately, because we are online only, we don't have the option to allow you to visit the growing grounds and pick out your plants specifically. We do make sure to pick the very best options prior to shipping and make sure that they have gone through our multi-point inspection for health and structure.
Do you have experts who pick out my plants?
Our team of horticulturalists and landscape architects as well as nursery tradesmen and women make sure that your plants are picked with optimal rooting and branching structures and are free of disease.
Do you offer planting?
We do! Planting prices will vary based on location, size of plants, and access to your space. Text or call 323-576-4159 with any planting questions.
You have a location near me. Can I stop by?
Our physical locations are growing grounds or transfer depots with heavy equipment and trucks and therefore are not open for customer visits unfortunately.
Why should I buy from you and not my local garden center or big box retailer?
We're able to offer a much greater selection of plants and supplies due to our vast network of growing grounds. Additionally, our plants and trees are only moved when they're shipped to you, without going through multiple stops, ensuring a more healthy plant.
This allows plants to be maintained with the proper irrigation and fertilization practices right before they're shipped, providing the best care and nutrients to ensure they thrive when planted.
Finally, each growing location is ideally suited to build the strongest plants acclimated to the environment they will grow best in.
Unlike many other nurseries, big box stores, and online sellers that may grow their plants in greenhouses or where they can achieve the fastest growth, our plants are grown where they will thrive in the future, so you have a plant that isn't just beautiful when it's delivered but beautiful well into the future.
